Here are a few random snips of my interview with Robbie Grey of Modern English from May, 1986:

NP: The first concert the band played — when and where?

RG: Our first gig was with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Adam and the Ants, and that was in 1979 at Colchester University. Basically, it was just anarchy. None of the bands could play…. it was wild. It was great.

NP: In the “I Melt With You” video, what happened to your arm?

RG: Honestly, all that happened was that was such a cheaply-made video. We were carrying all of our own equipment in, and I just cut myself on a mannequin, you know? Because it was in the video, I got some really weird letters from some strange girls that were into being cut up and things like that. It was really weird.

NP: If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?

RG: Oh! If I was invisible? I don’t know! If it was invisible, I supposed I’d like to be a fly on the wall in somebody’s bedroom while they were making love to somebody else. That would be sort of interesting. But I don’t know — I never really thought about that.

NP: What is one of your worst habits?

RG: It’s probably sleeping — I sleep a hell of a lot. If I can, I’ll probably sleep 10 hours a day — sometimes 12. I’m really bad, and everyone moans about it, but I like it.
